I And My Father Are One (John 10:30)

John 10:30 is one of the verses used to try and prove Jesus is God simply because Jesus says, "My Father and I are one."

We must realize that Jesus uses the concept of being "one” in other places of Scripture. For instance, in John 17:11,21-22, Jesus prays that all his followers may be “one” as he and God are "one". Does this make Jesus or us God?



We can see this concept as well with Paul where he says, “he who plants and he who waters are one” (1 Cor. 3:8). I like the Kingdom of God Version where it clears the meaning:

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God has been causing the growth, so that neither the one planting nor the one watering is important. The only One who really matters is God because He has been causing the growth. Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, but each will receive his reward in accord with his own work because we are God’s fellow workers.

Would we dare say that Apollos and Paul make up “one being”? The wording (in the Greek texts) is the same as in John 10:30. It has to do with "one in purpose."

John 10:30 is relaying the same idea (one in purpose), and that can be drawn from the context. Note "My hand," and the "Father's hand." (verses 28-29)

"I give them perfect life of the age to come, and they will never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one."

This has to do with the Father and Son as “one in purpose,” working together to keep the sheep, and not having to do with the false teaching of being one in essence or being.
